Overview

Crystal Rock is a submerged pinnacle located just north of Komodo Island, rising all the way to the surface at low tide — and drying out completely during extreme lows. This exposed seamount is known for its excellent visibility, powerful currents, and colorful biodiversity, making it a top choice for advanced divers seeking action and beauty in equal measure.

Best dived during slack tide, Crystal Rock offers a thrilling underwater experience with soft coral-covered slopes, dramatic current-swept ledges, and a dazzling concentration of fish life. A seasonal schooling mound to the northwest adds even more variety, making this site a favorite worth repeating.

Tips for Divers

Only attempt during slack tide — currents can be extremely strong and unpredictable.
A negative entry and quick descent are often required.
Bring a reef hook to enjoy the action without drifting.
One of the few sites in Komodo worth diving twice in a single trip.

Marine Life

Crystal Rock is known for its nonstop fish action. Thousands of anthias swirl across the reef, while yellow-ribbon sweetlips school in eye-catching groups. Frogfish, scorpionfish, and moray eels hide among the soft corals, and the nearby schooling mound brings seasonal visitors like snapper, trevally, and fusiliers.

Out in the blue, you’re likely to see mackerel and tuna darting through the current, especially near the deeper drop-offs. The coral coverage is vibrant and healthy — making it a great site for both wide-angle and macro photography when the current allows.
